Cultivating spaces for extraordinary artists

Sounding Change

Sounding Change

During the 10-month programme, artists will conceive and deliver a new work to be presented as part of the University’s Spring / Summer Concert Series between March and May 2024. Artists are encouraged to present their work both on the University campus and across the city, in order to present their commission. Artists will have opportunities to work alongside academics from across the university to develop their ideas and have access to the Department of Music’s facilities and University Music Ensembles.

Artists participating on the Sounding Change programme will receive a £2,500 bursary, a £4,500 commission fee, a £500 fee for delivering a workshop at the Department of Music, and a production budget of up to £2000.

Dr Annie Mahtani, Associate Professor of Music at University of Birmingham, comments: “The University of Birmingham Music Department is committed to tackling issues of under- representation within the performative and academic study of the arts. Sounding Change will give opportunities for artists to take essential time to explore and develop work. We want to be challenged as a Department and to enable bold and ambitious projects. Each programme will be unique from artist to artist and that excites us!”

Closing date for applications: Friday 9 June 2023 at 5pm.
