Cultivating spaces for extraordinary artists

Curator in Residence - Wysing Arts Centre

During 2020, Wysing will put broadcasting at the centre of their artistic programme; to connect with remote audiences in a way that enables them to listen, as well as to transmit, ideas using digital and other technologies.

Through exhibitions, events, residencies, retreats and their annual music festival, they will work with a range of artists and contributors across the year to explore how broadcast technologies, in particular radio, can enable the communication of ideas and create dialogue and understanding.

Building on the work of their recent programmes, they will focus on connecting a network of ‘many voices’ made up of those often left out of the conversation, whether due to access requirements, location outside of metropolitan centres, or discrimination due to race, gender and/or sexuality. Wysing will be looking to both amplify voices and enable supportive networks and connections to be made.

The gallery will become an expanded studio space where ideas are explored, including through exhibitions, commissioned and archival art works, recorded events with live audiences, new collaborations, and through works that are made specifically to be broadcast from Wysing.

As part of the year they are looking to work with a Curator in-Residence who is interested in the context of our 2020 programme and in exploring with them some of the barriers to accessing art.

It is within this context that they invite expressions of interest from a Curator who identifies as a Disabled person to be in-Residence at Wysing five days per month from April 2020 to March 2021.

The initial expectation is that the Curator in-Residence will work from Wysing’s site five days per month. This can be consecutive days or spread across the period. However, they are also open to exploring this and to alternative arrangements.

The role will be based within Wysing’s programme team. The Curator in-Residence will work alongside two permanent Curators, a Digital Producer, Education Manager and Head of Development, and be based in the programme office. The team works collaboratively and will work with the Curator in-Residence to support the development of their ideas, leading to a public outcome which could include an exhibition, event, or a talks programme.

The residency includes free onsite accommodation if required.

The residency fee is £13,750 (55 days at £250 per day) inclusive of VAT.
There is a budget of up to £1,250 for travel and other expenses.
There is a budget of £10,000 for a residency outcome.

This residency is part of a wider network and Wysing is working alongside DASH, the Midlands Art Centre (MAC) Birmingham and
MIMA Middlesbrough on the programme. Additional support is available from DASH, who are a Disabled led visual arts organisation.

Applications are made as a two-part process. The first asks for an initial expression of interest in response to the context of our 2020 programme, alongside some background information.

Following this initial phase, we will select approximately ten proposals to be worked up in further detail. Bursaries will be available for additional support for this phase.

Expressions of interest can be made in writing or recorded to video or audio. Wysing would prefer these to be made online via the website Submittable. Once you have set up a Submittable account, you can return to your expression of interest any time up until the deadline which is midnight on Sunday 15 December 2019. Please let Wysing know if you would prefer to email your application.

You will need to provide: your response to their 2020 programme (maximum 500 words or a five-minute recording).

Some information on: your experience and your areas of interest. (total maximum 500 words or a five-minute recording)

Your access requirements.

Wysing are happy to receive links to websites or already existing online material as a response to any of the areas outlined above, all of which can be added to Submittable.

If you would like to arrange an informal phone conversation about the role before applying, or have any other questions, please email donna.lynas(at)wysingartscentre.org or call 01954 718881.
