Cultivating spaces for extraordinary artists

Home Based Situated Practice (HBSP)

DASH are partnering with Compton Verney, Warwickshire on the pilot 2026 Home Based Situated Practice (HBSP) Artist Residency open call inviting applications from West Midlands based visual artists in response to the exhibition, Troublemakers and Prophets: Elizabeth Allen and Other Visionary Artists to take place at Compton Verney next year 28 March - 30 August 2026.

Home Based Situated Practice (HBSP) is a year-round virtual residency, commissioning programme and peer-support network conceived and delivered by DASH to nurture, mentor and platform artists who work from home or at a studio space nearby to home.

HBSP will offer 1-month supported virtual residencies for contemporary visual artists who encounter access barriers to ‘traditional’ in-person opportunities offered by brick-and-mortar galleries. Each residency will include opportunity for exhibitions, residencies, commissions, artist development and mentorship support.

DASH’s long-term commitment to supporting home-based artists through our mentorship work with D/deaf, Disabled and Neurodivergent artists has identified gaps in provision for those working almost exclusively from the home. Many feel disenfranchised and overlooked encountering systemic barriers to engagement and opportunities for sharing their work, often due to a variety of factors including, a lack of digital infrastructures and technical skills support from institutions with decreasing investment in digital access and an increasing hostility towards remote working since the Covid-19 Pandemic.

2025 saw the UK government propose the biggest cuts to disability benefits ever on record. Much of the debate centred around getting disabled and chronically ill people “off welfare and into work” (Department for Work and Pensions, March 2025). HBSP is an opportunity to reflect on this historic moment of disability activism in the UK, which DASH was a part of, but also to galvanise through an engagement with artists who have been and continue to be (in)visible.

About Compton Verney

Compton Verney is Britain’s leading art space in a park. We’re home to six world-class art collections, a programme of exciting exhibitions, a sculpture park and a café – with acres of parkland and meadows to explore and enjoy. All of this in a Robert Adam house, set in a Capability Brown landscape. We’re a space where all sorts of things can happen. We’re a charity that connects people with art, nature and creativity. And we do this by being collaborative, sustainable, bold, inclusive and fun. With so much going on here, and with such a warm welcome, we offer our visitors a day full of joy.

Our ambition is to move beyond sustainability to regeneration. Through art, we aim to help the world to renew, restore and grow – culturally, emotionally and environmentally. We want to become a model place of regeneration through art. Our current strategy prioritises expanding our market, enriching our offer and strengthening our own organisation.
